San Diego To-Do List

Caring for people. Connecting you with community.

A personal field guide

The places that make a community feel like home.

One of the best parts of living in San Diego County is discovering the places that give a neighborhood its character.

As a nurse and local Realtor, I spend a lot of time thinking about people, neighborhoods, and quality of life. A home isn’t just four walls. It’s your Saturday morning coffee spot, the restaurant you take visiting family to, the library you love, the garden where you clear your head, and those wonderful little shops where you find something you weren’t even looking for.

This is my growing collection of local picks, interesting finds, and places worth exploring throughout San Diego County.

“You should try this place.”

This isn’t a ranking of the “best” businesses—just a personal list I’ll continue to add to as I explore.

01 · Eat

Five restaurants to put on your list

Come hungry!

Felix’s combines barbecue with the comfort of Southern soul food. You’ll find favorites such as ribs, brisket, fried catfish, collard greens, candied yams, mac and cheese, and cornbread.

It’s the kind of place to visit when you’re craving a hearty meal and don’t mind sharing a taste from your plate.

Comfort food with family and friends.

This is one of those places that proves a wonderful restaurant doesn’t have to be sitting in the middle of a tourist district.

2051 Cucina Italiana brings the flavors of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region to Carlsbad, including house-made pasta and traditional Italian dishes.

Nurse Recommended For

A leisurely lunch, dinner with friends, or a relaxed date night.

Local tip: Don’t judge a restaurant by its shopping-center address. Some of our best local finds are hiding in plain sight.

Head into downtown Vista for Mediterranean, Armenian, and Middle Eastern-inspired flavors.

Hummus, garlic dip, kebabs, falafel, and shareable plates make Shaks especially fun when everyone at the table orders something different.

Nurse Recommended For

Ordering several dishes and sharing.

Campfire takes inspiration from one of life’s simplest pleasures: gathering together around a fire.

Located in Carlsbad Village, the restaurant centers its cooking around live-fire techniques and ingredients inspired by California’s diverse landscape. It also gives you the perfect excuse to explore the Village before or after dinner.

Nurse Recommended For

A special dinner followed by an evening walk through Carlsbad Village.

Dinner and a little history lesson? Yes, please.

Green Dragon combines a restaurant with a museum dedicated to early American and Revolutionary-era history. The menu has New England influences, including favorites such as lobster rolls and clam chowder.

Nurse Recommended For

Taking out-of-town guests somewhere a little unexpected.

02 · Sip

Coffee and plants

There are coffee shops—and then there are coffee shops that make you want to sit down, look around, and stay awhile. These are for my fellow coffee-and-plant people.

Coffee inside a nursery is almost unfair to plant lovers. Selva is located inside Terra Bella Nursery, creating a lush setting where you can enjoy coffee, matcha, or another drink surrounded by greenery.

Nurse Recommended For

Coffee dates, plant lovers, and anyone who considers buying another houseplant a perfectly reasonable activity.

Coffee, flowers, and thoughtful design come together at Communal. It’s an inviting place to grab breakfast or coffee, meet a friend, or simply enjoy a slower morning.

Nurse Recommended For

Coffee, flowers, and conversation.

Here’s another combination I love: coffee, plants, and a San Diego beach neighborhood. Enjoy your drink surrounded by greenery and then continue your day exploring Ocean Beach.

Nurse Recommended For

Turning an ordinary coffee run into a little outing.

03 · Explore

San Diego Botanic Garden

Don’t rush this one.

San Diego Botanic Garden stretches across approximately 37 acres and offers miles of trails through dramatically different plant environments.

You’ll encounter everything from tropical landscapes and bamboo to specialty gardens, family areas, and the striking Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. It’s beautiful, educational, and one of those places that can make a busy day feel considerably quieter.

Nurse Recommended For

Plant lovers, visiting family, a peaceful walk, or simply getting outdoors and resetting.

04 · Shop

A consignment treasure hunt

Consignment shopping is a treasure hunt—and that’s half the fun. My Sister’s Closet specializes in women’s designer consignment, with changing selections of clothing, handbags, shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

You never know what someone else decided to let go of just before you walked through the door.

Realtor Approved For

Finding something fabulous without automatically paying full retail.

05 · Home

Character for a new space

New house does not have to mean all-new furniture. Consignment Classics is a fun place to search for furniture, vintage pieces, home décor, china, pottery, and collectibles.

For homeowners who like interiors with personality, secondhand and vintage pieces can bring character into a room that simply can’t be ordered from a catalog.

Realtor Approved For

Homeowners, decorators, vintage lovers, and anyone furnishing a new place on a budget.

06 · Read

More than books

Libraries are one of my favorite indicators of what a community has to offer.

The Dove Lane location goes well beyond books. The complex includes the William D. Cannon Art Gallery, Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, and Friends of the Library Bookstore, along with library resources and programming.

Nurse Recommended For

Readers, families, lifelong learners, and a quiet afternoon.

A day in Carlsbad

Make it the destination.

If you have a free day, make Carlsbad the destination instead of simply driving through it.

  1. 1

Start at the Carlsbad City Library. Browse the Friends bookstore or see what’s happening at the art gallery.

  2. 2

Head toward Carlsbad Village. Walk State Street, browse the independent shops, and stop when something catches your attention.

  3. 3

Make your way toward the coast for a walk along Carlsbad State Beach.

  4. 4

Finish with dinner at Campfire or 2051 Cucina Italiana—or pair dinner with American history at Green Dragon Tavern & Museum.

Don’t schedule every minute. Park the car. Walk a few blocks. Go into the little store you’ve never heard of. Look at the houses. Notice the landscaping. Talk to somebody local. Sometimes that’s how you really discover a neighborhood.

Why “Nurse Recommended”?

Caring for people. Connecting people with community.

Nurses spend our working lives caring for people, listening to families, and learning about the communities we serve. Real estate has taught me something very similar.

People aren’t simply looking for a house. They’re looking for a place to build a life: where to get coffee, where to take visiting parents, where to spend a Saturday, and where to find something beautiful for home.

I’ll continue sharing local finds—from restaurants and coffee houses to gardens, libraries, consignment stores, neighborhood treasures, and places that simply deserve a visit. Because finding the right community should be almost as exciting as finding the right home.
